A MAGIC PLACE

@ l larsen
Recently I had to make an early morning trip to Cody, Wyoming. I was a little ahead of schedule. I stopped at the Wyoming Vietnam Veterans Memorial as I often do. I spoke with the men at that holy place. As 2:00AM arrived and it was time for me to depart, I was treated to some of the special magic of that place. As I turned towards my pick up all the lights went out. Including my headlights. I told myself that the sensors for the lights illuminating the flags were finally turned off by my headlights. And that my headlights had likewise been turned off by the flag lights shining on the sensor in my pick up. Coincidence or were the men saying goodbye?

THE GHOSTS OF KHE SANH
I have heard men talk of the ghosts of Khe Sanh from time to time. Marines that have returned to that place have sometimes commented on the felt presence of the men that died there. Some have even seen their images.
I do not doubt these stories at all. Their presence must be very powerful indeed. The ghosts are not new though. These are some that I have heard.
In June of 1967 the outpost on Hill 950 was struck by lightning. Two days later I had the opportunity to visit with one of the Marines who was struck. He told me of being completely paralyzed. His mind was aware though he was unable to communicate. He told of being aware of an examination and then being covered up. He assumed he was dead. He came to the next day in fine shape. This is not a ghost but it is close.
In August of 1967 a young C/1/26 Marine drowned while trying to save the lives of Bru tribesmen. His ghost was seen by Marines of his unit. I recall hearing of this at the time but I did not see the ghost.
Two or three years ago, I was talking with a K/3/26 Marine that lives near me. He had spent the entire seige on Hill 861. He told me of visits to the bunkers by the ghosts of Marines that had died there during the 1967 Hill fights. These visits were very real and he did not question them. The ghosts would tell them tales of the Hill Fights.
